“Jila country 1”, hand printed reduction linoprint, 2010,

Jila is the Walmajarri word meaning living waterhole. Walmajarri is the language of the people of the Great Sandy Desert region of Northern Western Australia. In the desert a Jila is a year round source of water, permanent waterhole, well, or underground spring and absolutely crucial for survival. The increase of mining activity in the area and privately owned stations made a critical impact upon the indigenous people’s access to a healthy, clean, salt free source of water.
